Getaway - Varberg Kusthotell

I have been looking forward for this little getaway for a few weeks. My partner gave me this weekend for my birthday and now we are headed for the Hotel. A weekend with no kids, just spending time with each other and this luxurious spa-retreat at Varbergs Kusthotell

Varbergs Kusthotell is situated right by the swedish west coast overlooking the Oresund strait. The sun is out and the it feels like the first day of spring after a long and cold winter.

As we are entering the hotel, we both notice how the hotel is extremely beautifully designed created with a warm welcoming touch.
We check in to our room, but after seeing the room we decide to try to upgrade. The reception staff are very helpful and even though the hotel is almost full they help us find another better suited room. We end up upgrading to the spa-suite – best choice ever!! Ocean view and our own magnificent bathroom for only 200 SEK more.

Upon check in we even get a toilet bag with spa-products from Phytomer and a thorough description on how to use these products during our stay. A wonderful little surprise gift.

The time has come to go to the Spa-area. As we enter the Spa itself it hits me that even here there has been cared for interior details. The different spa-rooms are beautiful, light and welcomes me with a sensation of calmness. The design has been done with a care and respect for the original building. I would have wished that people could have been more quiet, but I also guess that´s what you have to expect coming on a bank-holiday Friday. Fortunately for us, not many people have discovered the 2nd floor spa-lounge, so we escape to take a little break in each our loungers.

One of the spa-highlights, in my opinion, is the Aufsguss sauna by the sea. Even if I personally prefer more heat in the sauna to get a more extreme temperature difference between sauna and sea. This was still a beautiful, and for the place, an authentic experience. Friday afternoon the theme is Seaweed and the next morning Sea salt. The ausguss experience is finished off with a dip in the cold sea, which in May is still only 11 degrees.

After the Ausguss and a finishing shower we are headed into the sunset enjoying the beautiful scenery, the nature, the fresh sea air and each others company. As we are walking into the sunset I realise that we don´t have this quality time very often. Time were we can talk about everything and nothing without being interrupted by the schedule of life and I want this moment to never end!

All in all our stay at Varberg was a wonderful experience and I would most definately recommend it to others. Read more about Varbergs Kusthotell here

Love and light,
Kirstine

THE HISTORY OF VARBERG AS A HEALTH RESORT

There has been a health resort tradition in Varberg since the 1800s. A large range of facilities and absolute proximity to the fresh, salty sea has led to the town becoming the municipality with the highest density of spas in the country. Over the years bath houses have been built and equipped with the latest developments within water and health treatments. West Coast storms have always represented a challenge for the bath houses.

Varbergs kusthotell used to be a sanatorium. It was founded in 1904 by Varberg physician Johan Severin Almer, who was convinced that the marine climate was beneficial for children with tubercilosis.

The sanatorium was intended for children suffering from skrofulos as well as glandular, leg or joint tuberculosis. At the beginning of 1904, there was only one wooden building with room for about 20 patients, in addition to the dining room and room for nurses and assistants. During the year 1924, the sanatorium wound up 1,039 patients.

The Sanatorium’s operations declined as the tuberculosis declined and in 1985 the sanatorium was sold to a private buyer

Oh my… This place looks like the “resort” on that movie that just came out. Scary. But since you survived and got out, it must be a wonderful place. (I have a vivid imagination)
